Bayesian Autoencoders for Drift Detection in Industrial Environments
Autoencoders are unsupervised models which have been used for detecting
anomalies in multi-sensor environments. A typical use includes training a
predictive model with data from sensors operating under normal conditions and
using the model to detect anomalies. Anomalies can come either from real
changes in the environment (real drift) or from faulty sensory devices (virtual
drift); however, the use of Autoencoders to distinguish between different
anomalies has not yet been considered. To this end, we first propose the
development of Bayesian Autoencoders to quantify epistemic and aleatoric
uncertainties. We then test the Bayesian Autoencoder using a real-world
industrial dataset for hydraulic condition monitoring. The system is injected
with noise and drifts, and we have found the epistemic uncertainty to be less
sensitive to sensor perturbations as compared to the reconstruction loss. By
observing the reconstructed signals with the uncertainties, we gain
interpretable insights, and these uncertainties offer a potential avenue for
distinguishing real and virtual drifts
Chemical trends in the Galactic halo from APOGEE data
IndexaciĂłn: Web of Science; Scopus. The galaxy formation process in the A cold dark matter scenario can be constrained from the analysis of stars in the Milky Way's halo system. We examine the variation of chemical abundances in distant halo stars observed by the Apache Point Observatory Galactic Evolution Experiment ( APOGEE), as a function of distance from the Galactic Centre ( r) and iron abundance ([M/H]), in the range 5 less than or similar to r less than or similar to 30 kpc and - 2.5 15 kpc and [M/H] > - 1.1 (larger in the case of O, Mg, and S) with respect to the nearest halo stars. This result confirms previous claims for low-alpha stars found at larger distances. Chemical differences in elements with other nucleosynthetic origins (Ni, K, Na, and Al) are also detected. C and N do not provide reliable information about the interstellar medium from which stars formed because our sample comprises red giant branch and asymptotic giant branch stars and can experience mixing of material to their surfaces.https://academic.oup.com/mnras/article-lookup/doi/10.1093/mnras/stw286
Post Translational Modulation of β-Amyloid Precursor Protein Trafficking to the Cell Surface Alters Neuronal Iron Homeostasis
Cell surface β-Amyloid precursor protein (APP) is known to have a functional role in iron homeostasis through stabilising the iron export protein ferroportin (FPN). Mechanistic evidence of this role has previously only been provided through transcriptional or translational depletion of total APP levels. However, numerous post-translational modifications of APP are reported to regulate the location and trafficking of this protein to the cell surface. Stable overexpressing cell lines were generated that overexpressed APP with disrupted N-glycosylation (APPN467K and APPN496K) or ectodomain phosphorylation (APPS206A); sites selected for their proximity to the FPN binding site on the E2 domain of APP. We hypothesise that impaired N-glycosylation or phosphorylation of APP disrupts the functional location on the cell surface or binding to FPN to consequentially alter intracellular iron levels through impaired cell surface FPN stability. Outcomes confirm that these post-translational modifications are essential for the correct location of APP on the cell surface and highlight a novel mechanism by which the cell can modulate iron homeostasis. Further interrogation of other post-translational processes to APP is warranted in order to fully understand how each modification plays a role on regulating intracellular iron levels in health and disease
Doping the holographic Mott insulator
Mott insulators form because of strong electron repulsions, being at the
heart of strongly correlated electron physics. Conventionally these are
understood as classical "traffic jams" of electrons described by a short-ranged
entangled product ground state. Exploiting the holographic duality, which maps
the physics of densely entangled matter onto gravitational black hole physics,
we show how Mott-insulators can be constructed departing from entangled
non-Fermi liquid metallic states, such as the strange metals found in cuprate
superconductors. These "entangled Mott insulators" have traits in common with
the "classical" Mott insulators, such as the formation of Mott gap in the
optical conductivity, super-exchange-like interactions, and form "stripes" when
doped. They also exhibit new properties: the ordering wave vectors are detached
from the number of electrons in the unit cell, and the DC resistivity diverges
algebraically instead of exponentially as function of temperature. These
results may shed light on the mysterious ordering phenomena observed in
underdoped cuprates.Comment: 27 pages, 9 figures. Accepted in Nature Physic

Pandemic Communication: Information Seeking, Evaluation, and Self-Protective Behaviors in Vietnam and the Republic of Korea
Saliou (Eur J Epidemiol, 1994, 10 (4), 515–517) argued that pandemics are special kinds of crises and requires the public health sector to focus on: 1) reducing uncertainty, 2) rumor mitigation, and 3) ensuring the public reduces their risk of contracting the disease. With this as a backdrop, the central aim of this research is to better understand the connections between public information seeking, evaluation, and self-protective behaviors in the COVID-19 pandemic and focuses on a comparison between the Republic of Korea and Vietnam to provide insights into the influence of the individual, institutional, and information factors influencing people’s experience with COVID-19. Thus, there are two major contributions of this study. First, it provides a cross-theory evaluation of the factors that contribute to information seeking, evaluation, and self-protective behaviors. Second, the study identifies potentially critical differences in information seeking, evaluation, and self-protective behaviors based on acute disease reproduction in countries with a successful pandemic suppression history. Findings suggest that in countries where there are high levels of trust and satisfaction even small changes in the infection rates lead to different information seeking and self-protective behaviors

The fibroblast mitogen platelet-derived growth factor -BB (PDGF-BB) induces a transient expression of the orphan nuclear receptor NR4A1 (also named Nur77, TR3 or NGFIB). The aim of the present study was to investigate the pathways through which NR4A1 is induced by PDGF-BB and its functional role. We demonstrate that in PDGF-BB stimulated NIH3T3 cells, the MEK1/2 inhibitor CI-1040 strongly represses NR4A1 expression, whereas Erk5 downregulation delays the expression, but does not block it. Moreover, we report that treatment with the NF-ÎşB inhibitor BAY11-7082 suppresses NR4A1 mRNA and protein expression. The majority of NR4A1 in NIH3T3 was found to be localized in the cytoplasm and only a fraction was translocated to the nucleus after continued PDGF-BB treatment. Silencing NR4A1 slightly increased the proliferation rate of NIH3T3 cells; however, it did not affect the chemotactic or survival abilities conferred by PDGF-BB. Moreover, overexpression of NR4A1 promoted anchorage-independent growth of NIH3T3 cells and the glioblastoma cell lines U-105MG and U-251MG. Thus, whereas NR4A1, induced by PDGF-BB, suppresses cell growth on a solid surface, it increases anchorage-independent growth
Aging Studies for the Large Honeycomb Drift Tube System of the Outer Tracker of HERA-B
The HERA-B Outer Tracker consists of drift tubes folded from polycarbonate
foil and is operated with Ar/CF4/CO2 as drift gas. The detector has to stand
radiation levels which are similar to LHC conditions. The first prototypes
exposed to radiation in HERA-B suffered severe radiation damage due to the
development of self-sustaining currents (Malter effect). In a subsequent
extended R&D program major changes to the original concept for the drift tubes
(surface conductivity, drift gas, production materials) have been developed and
validated for use in harsh radiation environments. In the test program various
aging effects (like Malter currents, gain loss due to anode aging and etching
of the anode gold surface) have been observed and cures by tuning of operation
parameters have been developed.Comment: 14 pages, 6 figures, to be published in the Proceedings of the
